The birth of my blog is finally here! Check out the daily dish from yours truly, Melissa Ramos – Certified Nutritionist & Iridologist. I’ll be including thoughts of the day (and knowing me, there’ll be many!), useful health tips, recipes, photos and most importantly what’s going around town!

So let’s begin, shall we? Despite the up and down weather, I think it’s safe to say that spring is finally here and with that brings a whole new lot of tasty in-season foods. So you might be asking, “Who cares what’s in season! Why does it matter?” Actually it matters a whole bit. We should always try to buy in-season fruits and vegetables that are local because it offers us a higher nutrient profile than buying for example squash in June! In-season foods look more vibrant, taste better and offers us a greater connection to our land. Buying locally also helps to boost up the nutrient profile since we can be guaranteed that our food hasn’t been stuck on a truck or plane for days on end. Not to mention, we’re supporting our hard-working local farmers. So instead of going to the next biggest chain grocery store, why not check out some of the great farmer’s markets in and around town. They’re not only fun to stroll through with family and friends, but they offer prices that are at times comparable to the big wigs out there!

Toronto for example is filled with them. They have one practically for every direction in the city from Dufferin Grove Market to Saint Lawrence Market. For a complete listing please visit: http://www.toronto.ca/events/markets.htm.

If you’re not from the city and just happen to live in Milton, the fastest growing town in Canada, you’re in luck! Milton offers one of the most beautiful, varied farmer’s markets I’ve seen. The town closes off Main Street every Saturday beginning on May 19th and offers a place for residents of the community to get chat with one another, make friends and build a greater connection with their food and those who farm it. For more information on the Milton Farmer’s Market, please visit: http://chamber.milton.on.ca/FarmersMarket.html
